Tokyo Interspace - Increasing Informality - Masterplan

Poli Urban is pleased to present Tokyo Interspace – Increasing Informality, a compelling long-term vision for developing Tokyo’s vacant lots, a strategy that envisions how vacancy in Tokyo can be changed from an obstacle (vacancy as absence) to an asset (vacancy as possibility). While the focus is concentrated on Tokyo the idea of regenerating underutilized and sparse in-between spaces is very much becoming a global phenomenon. With cities becoming increasingly overcrowded the focus has been on high density living, rather than treating public space.

Tokyo Interspace will contribute to the sustainable urban regeneration of Tokyo, and offers the chance to create a flexible network of small spaces that are open, green, relaxing, entertaining and safe. Instead of a comprehensive development plan, individual sites will provide a flexible design strategy accepting of change, restoring texture and density to Tokyo’s Interspaces in a manner that will be incorporated into the surrounding fabric.
